South Asia Beat celebrates Indo-Pak Independence

south-asia-beatIt’s freedom weekend for Indians and Pakistanis. Both nations are celebrating their respective independence days - Pakistan on the 14th and India on the 15th. And so, saluting the occasion, South Asia Beat features remixed freedom songs from the two countries.

Ma Tujhe Salaam: Even 13 years after its release, this song clearly remains the most favoured patriotic number among Indians. Ma Tujhe Salaam - which means a salute to Mother India - was part of Rahman’s first freedom album: Vande Materam. Rahman produced this special vintage album for the 50th anniversary of India’s independence and dedicated it to the future generations of India.

Pak National Anthem remixed: What would the anthem be like on an electric guitar? The pioneers of Sufi Rock and also Pakistan’s most acclaimed band – Junoon- released their version of the anthem in their third album titled Inquilaab.

Aman Ki Asha: This January, the Indian and Pakistani media began a campaign to build the Indo-Pak relations their way. The Times of India and the Jang media group in Pakistan jointly founded Aman ki Asha which means hope for peace. And as part of this peace campaign they also released a music album that features songs by both Indian and Pakistani singers. Aman ki Asha already has over 20,000 Indians and Pakistani fans “liking” it on Facebook.
