Ik weet niet in welkk jaar dat was dat van Ormondt ging varen met de Rotterdam, maar hier is mijn verhaal van rond 1963 in t Engels want ik copy het van facebook waar een vriend Errol mijn “Op Zee” link leauk vond.
A true story of a Captains Dinner. I was in my black uniform with butterfly, small white towel over my arm standing by to fill glasses, take used plates and cutlery away and observe. I started as Commie de Rang. The ladies at both Captains sides in high class dress, he in gala with golden tresses and stripes, and the soup is served. One lady asks the captain for the pepper shaker. Captain gets it for her but when he shook it the lid went off and the pepper went in a cloud all over, in her nose as well. She held her head quiet backward for a short moment and then exploded with a loud sneeze all over the table and at that very moment her wig of auburn red hear fell off, splashing right in her plate of soup. I saw it all from a few feet, 2 meter close up. The head waiter shot forward to see what he could do. I put my little white towel I always carry under my chin and held it away like a violin making the movements with my right hand as i was playing it. Soon the captain and t
he lady were escorted out under suppressed giggles and smiles behind napkins. The captain had to change and did not return, the lady got her dinner in her cabin.
Just a nice moment in time on the Rotterdam.
I went several times to New York and once around the world. My time on the Rotterdam was wonderful and very hard. I was so good at serving that I became overworked and I collapsed and had to be put on paid leave. Half the world round for free! When I got no shore leave in Acapulco I dived from the ship in the bay, to be picked up by a water ski boat and so I could get my drink in a hammock under a palm tree before I took the passenger ferry back to the ship. On her last visit here at Sint Maarten I saw her, what a wonderful experience that ship gave me can not be told in all. See you in cyber space.
