Winds fell radio station tower in Surigao del Sur

Strong winds felled the 175-foot-tall tower of DXJS Radyo ng Bayan [738 kHz 5kW]  in Tandag, Surigao del Sur, in the Caraga region of Mindanao early Monday morning, reported the Philippine Information Agency (PIA). The Caraga region has been beset by strong winds and flash floods since the weekend, affecting over 250,000 people.

Radyo ng Bayan-Tandag senior announcer Nerissa Espinosa noted that the tower collapsed at the worst possible time, as it carried the only AM radio station in Tandag. According to Espinosa, the radio station is “needed most for necessary public warnings in calamity-stricken areas of the province brought about by continuous rains since New Year’s Day, January 1.”

The radio station tower was located on a hill at the back of the Surigao del Sur Provincial Sports Complex, which is within the 18-hectare Provincial Capitol compound. No other properties were reported damaged when the tower fell.
