The Voice of America has announced the launch of a new satellite transmission via Arabsat of its broadcasts to the Horn of Africa in Afan Oromo, Amharic and Tigrigna. This audio transmission of VOA’s shortwave programmes will display as VOA Africa 24 in a list of available channels. A number of VOA listeners in Ethiopia have posted messages in this blog asking for such a service, as the shortwave broadcasts are heavily jammed.
Listeners can tune into the audio of VOA’s regular live Monday-Friday broadcasts of Afan Oromo at 8:30 pm, Amharic at 9 pm and Tigrigna at 10 pm and the Amharic breakfast show at 6 am [local times]. These evening broadcasts will be repeated immediately following the live broadcasts. The breakfast show will be repeated at 7 am. At weekends, listeners can also hear the regular broadcasts on Saturday at 9 pm of the popular Amharic programme Ya Musica Qana, and on Sundays at 9 pm featured panel discussions and a live broadcast of Radio Magazine.
