One of the great characters of Dutch broadcasting, Henk (’Bull’) Verweij, has passed away at the age of 100. In 1960, together with his brothers Dirk and Jaap, the Hilversum businessman set up Radio Veronica, which broadcast from sea until 1974. In 1972, Verweij was found guilty of being one of the people behind the bombing of rival offshore broadcaster Radio Noordzee International, and served a three month prison sentence. But his contribution to commercial broadcasting in the Netherlands was recognised last year when he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the present-day Radio Veronica.

Radio Veronica was my constant companion from 1968 to 1974. Thankyou ,”Oom Bull”, for starting the station & educating me about Dutch pop music.
