Venezuela’s media crimes bill proposed by Attorney General Luisa Ortega Diaz, which calls for imprisonment for those who broadcast “anxiety causing information” to the population, did not reach a consensus for its eventual approval in the National Assembly’s Media Commission.
Disagreement among Members of Parliament who support President Hugo Chávez was most evident in statements made on the controversial project’s content. “There must be freedom of expression, but it must be applied with the integrity of already existing laws,” said journalist and MP Desiree Santos Amaral.
Media Commission chairman, Manuel Villalba, diminished the importance of disagreements and preferred to deny that they’ve submitted a proposal for consideration. An independent study revealed that 80% of Venezuelans reject the measures taken against the media.
