Uganda Broadcasting Corporation says Top TV illegally using its mast

The Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) says it will switch off Top TV for illegally installing studio transmission equipment in UBC’s Kololo Hill transmission room. Musinguzi Mugasa, the UBC managing director, yesterday said the Broadcasting Council had recommended that all TV stations that transferred their studio equipment to Kololo Hill be barred from broadcasting.

He clarified that they would not switch off Pulse TV as earlier reported, but rather Top TV. Mugasa said: “There was a mix-up on Pulse TV. It is Top TV that illegally transferred studio equipment to Kololo.”

On switching off Nation TV, Mugasa said they were to discuss the matter with NTV officials. He pointed out that the lease requested by NTV to use the UBC transmission room had expired and was not renewed because the 400kg NTV antenna imposed extra weight on the UBC mast, forcing it to tilt. Mugisa denied claims of sabotage, saying earlier disruptions of NTV broadcasts were caused by unsealed cables that were spoilt by water.
