Starting tomorrow, which is Queen’s Day in the Netherlands, listeners to the Dutch domestic network Radio 5 (audible in surrounding countries on mediumwave 747 kHz) will hear the Dutch national anthem, the Wilhelmus, every day immediately after the news at 6 am (0400 UTC). The broadcaster MAX, which caters for Radio 5’s key target group of 50 plussers, says it wants to revive a tradition. The Wilhelmus used to be played at closedown of the public radio networks, but since these are now on the air 24/7 the anthem has only been heard on special occasions in recent years. It is still played at the end of Dutch transmissions on Radio Netherlands Worldwide.
