The biggest English-language web portal in Taiwan, www.etaiwannews.com, is about to launch its programme “Watch the News and Learn English” on the Chinese-language version of the Taiwan News web site. The group’s TNTV online television news began with successful live trial broadcasts on 22 April.
Taiwan News President Jack Wong said the news group’s website would offer daily broadcasts of the most up-to-date news about politics, society, health, environmental affairs and sports in English-language and Chinese-language versions. On the English-language website, foreign visitors can learn Chinese, while the Chinese-language site is about to launch the programme “Watch the News and Learn English” to promote the study of the English language.
The anchor for the Chinese-language version of the TNTV online television service is 24-year-old Karolyn Kieke, a United States national who graduated from the philosophy and sociology departments of National Chengchi University. By joining TNTV, she will also become the first foreign-looking English-language news anchor in Taiwan. Apart from speaking fluent Chinese, English, German, Polish and Japanese, she passed the exam to win a Chinese-language teaching certificate and also speaks Taiwanese.
