Although it doesn’t seem to have been widely reported, the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation now has its own Website. This includes live audio streams from City FM and the Tamil National Service. However, the bit rate for both streams is low - 12 kbps. Some parts of the site are still under construction.

Can I listen 7:30 AM SLBC programme online?
on Feb 24th, 2010 at 14:24
We are living in Solapur of Maharashtra State . I am fond of all hindi programmes of hindi section of your slbc. But since last five years we are not getting the strong signals and hence could not avail the opportunity to listen this favourite section. I request to please make suitable technical improvement in the infrastructurae so that every indian hindi loving listner can listen the golden songs as to before henceforth.

Being an ardent fan of SLBC Southeast Asia Transmissions over last three decades on SW7190 KHZ & 11905 KHZ and the HINDI Broadcast between 7PM and 10PM during my teens I could never forget the sweet voices of your programme presenters at the Studios of SLBC (erstwhile Radio Ceylon),I very much dejected to write that I miss all these when I crave for the most especially, due to the current location where I live at present due to the very poor reception quality available at this and am perforce compelled to listen to the online Radio Service of SLBC over the internet where stations like Thendral (Tamil),Kandurata FM, SLBC Tamil & Sinhalese Commercial Services are available till 11PM (IST). I also miss the TV Channel RUPAVAHINI which I used to view while at Karaikkudi Tamilnadu when some Tamil Serials and English Serials like KNIGHT RIDERS & OSHIN were used to be aired (during 1987–1990).Can\’t these Transmissions be REvived and Improved please

i am an ardent fan of slbc -hindi service and as Mr S Bhardwaj says, greatly miss the hindi service. I live in Mumbai but sad to say that the reception quality is poor - at times unable to hear at all. Understand that the hindi service is now broadcast only in the morning from 0555 hrs to 0830 hrs.
An update on the same would be greatly appreciated.
on May 15th, 2010 at 03:09
I share the same concern as Mr.Singh and Mr.Bharadwaj. However, I am better off given my location. The reception of SLBC Hindi is much better these days. Several requests have been sent to the engineering team at SLBC and they claim to be working on it. However, lack of interest on the part of the officials to improve transmission is very apparent. Radio Ceylon used to be the king until early 80s when Television in India took over and commercials were withdrawn from SLBC. Nevertheless the ardent listeners are still latching on, regardless of the quality of reception. I do listen to SLBC Hindi regularly. The requests come from several parts of India and Pakistan. I have also heard of requests from Mumbai too. Mr.Singh, you should give it a try now.
on May 26th, 2010 at 09:22
I am from northern Indian state of Jharkhand (Ranchi to be precise). I used to listen to English service of SLBC both in the morning and evening in the late 80s till 2005-06. later they withdrawn the evening broadcast and also cut transmission hour for morning broadcast. Nowadays signals of english service is not strong in the 19/31 mr. band as it used to be in the 80s. Being an ardent fan of SLBC I hope that some day power of English service transmitter will be enhanced and I will again be able to listen to SLBC and enjoy the transmission.

Thank you Mr.Dubey and co. This truly is a wonderful news. However, the evening broadcast stopped on March 31, 2008 and not 2006 as you mentioned. Never mind, I think it should be typing mistake. I am surprised, there was no such announcement this morning’s transmission. Thank you for your efforts. I shall tune in today.
on Jun 5th, 2010 at 07:42
i’m so happy to know that the evening transmission is on. i surfed through all hindi and marathi news channels after reading the news on a strip on sahyadri, marathi channel of DD. no other channel took the efforts to convey the golden news while they were repeating the same rote throughout the day as their routine is. i hope the online broadcast starts soon. i’m equally exalted like paresh dubey.

Dear Mr Dubey: That is indeed a piece of good news. Until now I was unaware that the evening broadcast is again being restarted. Will appreciate if you could please elaborate on the timings. Wish the transmission quality also improves.

I am disappointed to try in vain. Please let me know if any of you have tried and found radio Ceylon Hindi broadcast evening transmission. I listened to the morning transmission today as usual, and there was no mention of the evening transmission. The standard announcement said that the next transmission would begin at 5:50 am, tomorrow.

Mr.Ashraf, as of now, the online transmission of Radio Ceylon Hindi is limited to one hour in the night only (9:00 pm to 10:00 pm IST) which was started a few days back. I guess the service will be extended to day time transmission too in the future. You can log on to http://www.slbc.lk and listen to a one hour program “NAMASTE INDIA”

on Jun 13th, 2010 at 01:14
Mr.Cyril, nice to know you too are a regular listener of SLBC. Reception depends on several factors. Geographical location is one of them. I am sure, if you are listening for so many years, you would certainly know it. Have you tried on both the meter bands (25 and 41 meters)? You probably need to connect and better, longer antenna to improve the reception.

I wish 2 share with all audience and SLBC Hindi service family that it is really a matter of great pride and pleasure to be connected with slbc 7.30 AM programe specially, presented by Ms Padmini Parera. Being fan of slbc compels to be fan of Padminiji too. Her presentation and selection of songs is marvelous, for example, todays program i.e. on 26th Sept. 2010 for Lataji’s B.day.
Her comeback is really a gift for me.
enjoy listening slbc 7.30

It is learnt that SLBC is again starting hindi programme broadcasting from 21.00 to 22 Hrs. This span of time is very less and needs to be upto minimum 00.00 Hrs with full of old sweet songs sung by our noted old masters and musicians. Why the authority of SLBC is not declaring / announcing the new schedule on their website as well as on radio. The present time given for morning broadcoasting should be minimum upto 10.00 AM as before. Myself with lacks of such fans of SLBC are waiting for this announcement.
on Mar 24th, 2011 at 04:46
Dear Mr.Vedpathak, it is close to a year now since SLBC started the night broadcast titled “Namasthe India”, at exact time as you have mentioned on 11905 KHz (25m band). This program is also available online on http://www.slbc.lk simultaneously. The program plays a mixture of Hindi and English songs.
The reason SLBC assigns for curtailing the broadcast hours is “lack of budget allocation”. If you remember well, back until early 80s, SLBC used to generate revenue through commercials. Now that all the attention is towards TV and FM broadcast, revenue generation is almost nil, excepting that generated by a few christian programs. A lot of listeners like you and I have expressed anguish at curtailing of broadcast time. Some have contemplated sending a representation to the President of Srilanka. They may have even sent it by now, I am not sure. A collective effort like that should help. Unfortunately, majority of listeners are not net savvy. That’s not a necessity but it helps to bring all the listeners together faster. If possible, do drop in a mail to my id r.ashrit@gmail.com. We shall discuss.

Radio Ceylon (SLBC) HIndi program is available on the internet. However, their streaming goes down very frequently. Especially in the last week or so, the streaming has encountered very frequent breakdown. It appears they are trying to fix it and should be fine soon. Let\’s hope for it. Officially Vivid Bharathi is not live on the internet. However I am not sure if some enthusiast is streaming it live. I have searched for the same on the net, but I have only found some bogus claims.

I am not able to listen to SLBC since last Friday over internet. It plays smoothly for sometime then I get message - cannot connect to server. I would like to know whether it is an issue with SLBC transmission or something wrong with browser setting on my laptop.
on Aug 9th, 2011 at 12:05
Mr.Rajan, SLBC has problem with connectivity at their end. Don’t try changing anything on your laptop. The transmission has been on and off. You just need to hope that it connects. There are times when it plays uninterrupted right through 6 to 8.
on Aug 23rd, 2011 at 16:36
can SLBC authorities restart morning programmes up to 1000Hrs and in the evning from 700 to 9.00pm?

The streaming in the morning hours is mono. The sound comes from only one speaker connected to my computer. Is there a way of channeling the audio to both the speakers?

Thanks Mr.Shripad Kulkarni. easy96 is a good radio station. I have been listening to it for the last 2 years and I do enjoy the programs. Mr.Rajan, SLBC streaming is stereo and they have a problem with one of the channels. They are yet to fix it. You can do very little at your end. I however feed both the amplifiers (L and R) with the one channel that is being streamed properly. You can give it a try.

on Sep 25th, 2011 at 02:59
Mr.Ramesh Chandran, The night transmission of Radio Ceylon (SLBC) HIndi has been discontinued from March 31, 2008. Subsequently they curtailed morning transmission too in a phased manner. In a matter of two years they brought the close time down from 9:30 am to 8:00 am and is currently broadcasting from 6:00 to 8:00 in the morning (25m, 41m and live streaming on the net). They had started a one hour program at 9:00 in the night called “Namaste India” with a mixture of Hindi and English songs last year. They closed that too sometime back. The days of “Hamesha jawan geet” is long over, sadly.

We live in Australia. Before migrating to Australia 23 years ago, I was a regular listener of Radio Cylon, now SLBC. I am very happy that I can listen to SLBC online in the morning from 11.20am to 1.30pm in Canberra. I can generally listen to it maily during weekends and public holidays.

Radio Ceylon streaming is down again today. This is happening quite often these days. Ms.Ruby smitha, please bring this to the notice of the authorities concerned. Even when the streaming is up, on most days, one of the two channels is malfunctioning. I could even send you a sample copy of the reception so that engineers at SLBC could analyse, if you can give me your email id.

Yes…I agree Mukund ji…SLBC transmission is down on so many times….The technical personalities shall look into the matter to resolve it early.even on Radio.the transmission is not coming that good……..!!!
I will tell this to Padmini pasreirra ji..the gr8 announcer of SLBC….let us see what SLBC can do to improvise theie broadcasting on Radio & on web

Dear Mukund ji
I have fond memories right from 1960 when my nana ji - Station Master at a remote railway station, used to listen Radio Ceylone on his Radio set operated on battery . lateron I also glued to Radio Ceylone programmes and enjoyed it despite poor reception as it is the quality of programme and songs which finally matters. Now I am 53 years old, presently posted in Dehradun, yet nostalgia associated with Radio Ceylone ( I still love to recall it by its earstwhile name ), is beyond words to express. Wish it may regain its earlier glory and strength enabling us to enjoy music with soul.

Yesterday morning the SLBC Hindi program was not coming through net (Not connecting to server). But through the same link, in the afternoon, between 3 to 6 PM, various Malayalam/Tamil/Kannada programs were clearly audible. Today, again not connecting to server. It does not appear to be a technical fault. There could be other reasons for this uncertaintly over SLBC Hindi program through net.

Due to uncertainty in SLBC Hindi Program Online streaming, I have been looking for alternative ways of listening to the program. My assumption is that the Radio broadcast of this program is quite regular and that the uncertainty/irregularity is only relating to its streaming over internet (TO BE CONFIRMED by those who regularly listen to this program on Radio).
I have been searching for a good transistor/radio with SW band selection option. Almost all the transistor/radios now available in market have only AM and FM option. Moreover, I understand that the quality of reception on Transistor/radio is very poor. Following alternatives exist as per information on net:
1) Sony – ICF – SW7600GR model transistor’s SW option is rated as a good option for SW bands (based on information available on Net). Negative aspects – (a) exhorbitant price about Rs. 11000/- ($ price converted to Rs.). (b) this set is not available in India. (c) Sony has mentioned that they do not know whether this set will ever be available in India.
2) Software driven Radios: (Winradio) – This is available in several countries but not in India. As per Youtube posting (sample recording available in youtube), quality of reception on Winradio is better than standard transistors/radios. In India, this type of radios are made by BEL only for defence and security agencies.
Investing any sum in any of these options will be a waste if Radio broadcast of SLBC program is also quite irregular. Request anybody who has been hearing this program on Radio at present to please let me know the status of program on Trnasistor/radios

Dear SLBC Listeners,
Could u please make it convenient to inform me know whether Radio trans meters.
the morning/evening program mes are coming clearly or otherwise?
on Dec 6th, 2011 at 10:53
Mr.Cyril could you please elaborate your question? By the way there is no evening broadcast now. However, if I have understood your question right, the morning transmission on 25m band is very clear. The internet streaming is not consistent. It fails on most days.
on Dec 6th, 2011 at 11:21
Mr.Rajan, I do listen to SLBC on transistor radio quite regularly. Well almost everyday. The reception is quite good, but you can pick up signals not earlier than 6:20. SLBC has scaled down it’s transmitter strength very significantly. I have a SONY ICF - F125, which has good stability. It is an inexpensive radio and I am quite happy with it’s performance. It costs about Rs.1000 and you can give it a go. By the way, as you must be knowing, the quality of reception depends on various factors and your geographical location is one prime factor.
on Dec 6th, 2011 at 11:40
Mr. Mukund, Thanks a lot for your response. I am currently located in Mangalore while my home is in Mumbai. I will look for the model mentioned by you though not sure about quality of reception. Regards.
on Dec 17th, 2011 at 11:33
Have tried Sony ICF 12S. Not getting signal (not even a weak signal) at 4:30 PM when normally Tamil or Malayalam program should be on. Now only way is to sit with crossed fingers for the online link to start working. I observed that the program was on from 7AM to 8AM on Nov 4th and Nov 11th (both Sundays).
on Dec 17th, 2011 at 15:40
will any one could inform me that SLBC morning and evening transmission in air is coming properly or not? thanks.
on Dec 17th, 2011 at 16:10
Mr.Rajan and Mr.Cyril, the transmission of Radio Ceylon Hindi section is being transmitted everyday from 5:50 am to 8:00 am and on Tuesdays till 8:15 am. However, the reception depends on various factors like the terrain, weather etc. More over, the power of the SLBC transmitter has been greatly reduced, and that makes it all the more difficult to receive quality signals. I know it is a bit difficult to receive the signals in coastal regions. I have tried it in Mangalore and Udupi. However, in my place here in Bellary, Karnataka I receive very good signals on almost everyday. If you can give me your email ids. I shall mail you the mp3 samples of the reception on radio. Unfortunately, the internet streaming is so consistently down these days, it is quite frustrating. I have written to SLBC authorities, sadly they don\’t even respond for courtesy. If Ms. Ruby Snita (of SLBC) is reading this post, kindly respond.
on Dec 17th, 2011 at 16:17
Correction: Radio Ceylon Hindi program is transmitted everyday from 5:50 am to 8:00 am on 25m (11905 KHz) and 41m (7190 KHz).
on Dec 18th, 2011 at 04:57
Mr. Mukund,
Thanks a lot for clarification reg reception quality at coastal region.
CORRECTION reg Post # 103: The dates should be Dec 4th and Dec 11th instead of Nov.
As I was expecting, internet streaming was on today (Sunday). Also noticed that second speaker was also audible. Though I did not like the quality of transmission today so much. But this good enough for enjoying the songs. What happened to other program hosts - Jyoti Parmar and Padmini Pareira!!!!

Details about radio Ceylon is not known. I have a Philips MW/SW/FM Radio. Can any one give information about why Radio Bhadravathi or Ceylon can’t be heard?
on Dec 22nd, 2011 at 09:38
Dear Mr.Bhatta, if your radio has 25m band and 41m band, you can receive radio Ceylon. Hindi broadcast starts from 5:50 am and ends at 8:00 am. However, the signals are not strong enough until 6:30. Later on, they get stronger and you can get clear reception. There are reports that Radio Ceylon evening Hindi broadcast is set to make a comeback with some new transmitters being purchased by SLBC.
Regarding radio Bhadravathi, it depends on your geographical location. Moreover, it is a low power MW transmitter and depend largely on weather conditions. I do receive it at times, but not very consistently.

R.Mukund

Since yesterday, while listening to SLBC online, the transmission is continuously breaking (buffering after every few seconds). Whether other listeners are also facing same problem? IS it an issue with transmission or issue with net connection at my end. I suspect the former as Vividh Bharati online is working properly.
on Jan 2nd, 2012 at 07:36
Buffering problem with SLBC on line is indeed existing for last two three days. It is restricted with SLBC only , others web radio are working fine.
on Jan 3rd, 2012 at 13:46
Today in the morning session, SLBC Hindi channel was still suffering from buffering issue. Therefore, tried this link at around 5:15 PM (IST) today when normally Telugu, Malayalam and Tamil songs are played. The streaming was normal without buffering issue - hope it will be normal tomorrow morning as well.
Thereafter, when clicked City FM link on the same SLBC home page at 5: 25 PM (IST), found some program of Hindi film songs going on. The ads were all in Sinhalese but song details were being announced in Hindi (probably it was Jyoti Parmar\’s voice). There were plenty of ads and only 4 songs were played between 5:30 - 6:00 PM - from Aradhana, Abhiman, Geet and the last one was Kolaradi di.
on Jan 3rd, 2012 at 15:33
Mr.Rajan, I am a bit surprised. I did listen to SLBC this morning on internet from 7:00 until close at 8:15. There wasn’t a minute’s break in streaming. More over, both the channels (left and right) are functioning now and the audio quality is very much improved.
on Jan 3rd, 2012 at 16:50
Mr.Mukund, This is intriguing. One of my friends in Lucknow mentioned the same experience. Last Friday Dec 30th , when I got the program properly for the full period, he had problem of very frequent breaks. Mr. Mukesh also had similar experience for last two days. (Just now spoke to my Lucknow friend who confirmed that today\’s program smooth).
As regards audio through both speakers, what you mentioned is true.
I would welcome comments from some listeners who are conversant with streaming, bandwidth and traffic.
Regards,
on Jan 3rd, 2012 at 17:56
I agree with Mr.Mukund. There was no streaming problem today i.e 3rd Jan. I am from Dehradun. Hope, now onwards net broadcast will be smooth. Jyoti Parmar also shown concern about web listeners of SLBC in Morning broadcast. It is expected connectivity will improve in future.
on Jan 4th, 2012 at 01:28
Mr.Rajan, Buffering can happen in following conditions:
1.Drop in broadband speed 2.Bandwidth conservation at the receiving end. 3.RAM size. 4.Bandwidth limitation at the streaming source.
I am sure you must be using a fast connection and at home. If that is the case, 1 and 2 are irrelevant. I am told that their streaming bandwidth has been upgraded and is able to support the traffic. We need to wait and watch since it has been all but 5 days with very little or no interruption.
Regards,
R.Mukund
on Jan 4th, 2012 at 14:16
Mr. Mukund and Mr. Mukesh,
Thanks for your response and clarification reg. bandwidth related matters. I heard the program today without any interruption through out the period 5:50 Am till 8 AM IST.
However, I saw another post from a friend in a different forum that the quality of transmission in his location (in US) was not good. He had posted it on Jan 2nd (US time). Not sure whether he meant 2nd Jan program or any other day. As mentioned in my last post, my friend from Lucknow was also able to hear it properly on Jan 3rd.
I agree with Mr. Mukund that the issue could be local at my end (listener\’s end) particularly when there are listeners who could listen to the program properly. I am using broadband connection at home from Airtel. This has served me very well all these days ever since I started listening to SLBC in July 2011 when I got the link. I heard their program today at 4:30 Pm (Tamil) and between 5 PM till 6 Pm (Hindi on City FM link on their webpage). It was smooth with good quality.
I propose to monitor my usage (cumulative downloads for the month) regularly. Normally, if the download volume exceeds a threshold for agreed speed, then the ISP generally reduces the speed by half till end of the billing period. Another possibility is that high traffic caused by new year greetings might have created some temporary bottleneck in the ISP\’s infrastructure affecting quality of service.
Wishing a happy and melodious 2012 to all our friends.
Regards,
Rajan

Today on 5th January ( in Dehradun) I faced buffering problem in SLBC morning transmission. What is the feed back from other listeners …kindly post .
on Jan 5th, 2012 at 10:18
Mr.Mukesh Kaushik,
For how long did you face this? I listened to today’s program from 5:50 until the end of the transmission at 8:00. I did not not notice even a single interruption. I guess it is a problem with your ISP. Did your system try to reconnect at any point in time? Could you please let me know the configuration of your system? If you have enough memory and the broadband speed at specified level, you should face no problem as long as the streaming is fine. Kindly check if your system is running any preset program at that time, like auto maintenance (eg. tuneup utilities)

Mr. Mukesh, I could listen to the program on Jan 5th and 6th morning (IST) without any problem from 5:50 AM till 8 AM. However, my friend in Lucknow yesterday mentioned that there were buffering issues at his end. He will not be listening to the program today and tomorrow as he is out of station; so cannot know about today\’s status.
on Jan 6th, 2012 at 07:52
Dear Sh. Mukund and Rajan
From the time to time observations of various listeners, it seems that buffering issue of SLBC is an intermittent phenomenon, being noticed at place to place on certain factors not essentially related with System configuration as other on line streaming of SLBC as well as Radio easy96, Radio sada bahar and Vivid Bhartii operates fine. Besides, after problem very next day Streaming of SLBC works smoothly. In Dehradun, there was problem on 5th Jan. but today on 6th Jan reception was smooth without any interruption.. On certain days it is also observed that after initial problem, reception gets smooth by passage of time say 7 AM .

There was problem with streaming of SLBC program this morning. Did any of you face it. Please let me know. There was buffering most of the time and it was apparent that they were trying something, since in between I could hear some English song. Dear Sh. Mukund
Today at this end SLBC streaming was smooth around 6.45 A.M but after some time I switched over to Vividh Bharti as SLBC was streaming English songs linked with Asia English Service . During 5 minutes duration when I was hooked to SLBC buffering hurdle was not noticed. I think buffering problem appears at random here and there at any time, any place like terrorist attack ( ha ha )

Mr. Mukund, On Jan 9th morning, I did not find any streaming till around 6:05 Am IST. Then I tried other links on the SLBC home page. To my surprise I found Hindi streaning on Asia English Live link. A few Bhajans were played when suddenly it went off. Thereafter, there was no transmission either from Asia English or Asia Hindi link. At 7 AM both channels started streaming English programs. That is when I disconnected from the net.
However, the Asia Hindi link was Ok except for audio quality as mentioned by Mr. Jagdish from Australia.

To listen Radio Ceylone through Net, go to following link :
http://www.slbc.lk/
It will connect to Web page of Sri lanka Broadcasting Corporation. At the end of page on left hand side, you will find link to ASIA (HINDI SERVICE). Clik the link to get connected. To my knowledge Radio Ceylone does not operate Urdu Service and perhaps in your above post your reference is for Hindi Service.

Mr.Mukund, Thank you very much for the list. When I linked to SLBC, Ghayal song was in progress. Ek Jhalak and Paying Guest songs are commonly heard. But I have not heard Shah Behram song of Talat, Asha. I have heard only the Talat solo - an excellent song.
Thanks a lot.

Hi ‘listeners of Radio Ceylon’friends. I was overwhelmed to find so many friends still continuously trying to hear radio Ceylon despite all odds. The sweet voice of yesteryear announcer Vijayalaxmi with the words “din ke aath baje hain aur ye ceylon broadcasting corporation ke videsh vibhag hain” still lingersin my ears. Till 1970 I used to hear only Binaca Geetmala programme broadcast by radio ceylon. Only after moving over to Bangalore in 1970 I started listening other programmes also. Now not a day pass without hearing radio Ceylon and it has become part and parcel of my life. I welcome and share any information related to my favourite radio station. My email is address is ‘rameshnpuranik@gmail.com’. THANKS.

Hi Everyone,
Happy days are here again! I still can\’t believe that I can listen to SLBC in Canberra, Australia. I still remember my childhood days in the mid sixties in Mumbai when I used to listen to Radio Ceylon. Wednesdays had become synonymous with Binaca Geetmala.
I still remember the great voices of announcers Dalvirsingh Parmar and Manohar Mahajan. I am not sure whether the current announcer Jyoti Parmar is related to him.
I would like to inform all the musiclovers of old songs that there is one site eprasaran.com where you can listen to programs presented by Mr. Subhash Kelkar. He has got a great voice like Mr. Ameen Sayani. The programs are uploaded every week. There are good Marathi programs as well for those who love Marathi music.

I also started listening to Radio Ceylone in 1960,s. I am now in Sydney. I just discovered its on-line version. Some times there is sound distortion. I wrote to SLBC people but they never replied.
Can anybody send me email address to contact Hindi service people for few song requests or email address of Jyoti parmar?
thanks

Dr.Sohail, I have been writing to them in the form of feedback, but unfortunately they don’t bother to respond. The mail doesn’t even bounce. The email ids are the same as those given on their website. I have given them complete analysis of their audio quality with waveforms (then and now) to compare. Give me your email id. I shall give you more details.
