Al-Shabab Islamists who control much of southern Somalia have silenced an independent radio station which operates in Balad Hawo town near the Kenyan border, officials said on Thursday. Mandeq, the local FM station, has been ordered off air by Al-Shabab after the administration of the station and al-Shabab officials argued over the programmes that it broadcasts.
The Islamists say the music is “un-Islamic”. The administration of the station reportedly rejected Al-Shabab’s to submit its programmes to Al-Shabab for approval.
The audience of the station have expressed great concern about its closure. The station is listened to in four towns in Somalia and Kenya on the border between the two countries.
