Somali government shuts down independent radio station

Somali government soldiers yesterday stormed the building housing an independent radio station located in the southwestern town of Baidoa where the interim government was until recently based. The order to shutdown Radio Warsan came from Mohamed Hashi Gabow, the government-appointed police commander for Bay region where Baidoa is located, according Garowe Online sources.

Radio Warsan is an FM-based radio station which offers Baidoa residents daily local, national and international news. The exact reason for the government’s crackdown on Radio Warsan is unknown, but it marks the third time government forces have shut down the station. Last month, the government soldiers forcefully entered the station and ordered its closure after the radio aired news that displeased government leaders.
