Senior Chinese official highlights radio/TV cooperation with Albania

A senior Chinese official has called for further cooperation with Albania in broadcasting and television, saying the media could act as bridge for friendship between the two peoples. Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks while meeting with the director-general of Albanian Radio and Television (ART), Petrit Beci, in Beijing.

Mr Liu said China was willing to work with Albania to innovate the approaches and expand channels for cooperation. He said bilateral exchanges and cooperation in radio and television field had developed well, and China would continue to enhance cooperation with ART in technology, personnel exchanges and programmes.

Mr Beci said Albania would further expand bilateral exchanges and cooperation in broadcasting and television with China.

Andy Sennitt comments: Those of us who can remember the 1970s will recall that China and Albania have had major media cooperation in the past, when CRI - known in those days as Radio Peking - used to broadcast via shortwave as well as mediumwave transmitters in Albania. The mediumwave transmissions resumed in 2004, following a break of more than 25 years when Albania’s leader Enver Hoxha fell out with the Chinese in 1978. The Albanian transmitters, of Chinese origin, are badly in need of replacing/upgrading, so perhaps that will now happen.

Andy, I seem to remember that it was actually called “Radio Peking” back in the 70s. I have lots of QSL cards to prove it ;-)
