Save Radio New Zealand protest in Auckland on Monday

Fans of the popular Save Radio New Zealand Facebook group will be coming together outside of Radio New Zealand House in Aukland at 12:30pm Monday 1 March. They will be there to show their support for public service broadcasting in New Zealand and to send a clear message to Broadcasting Minister Jonathan Coleman: “hands off Radio NZ”.

The Save Radio New Zealand Facebook group, which has attracted over 16,000 fans, was set up to oppose proposals outlined by the Broadcasting Minister, and in Radio New Zealand documents released to TVNZ, that suggested drastic and unwelcome changes to the way RNZ runs its business, in response from calls from the Minister to save money. Such measures included; sponsorship of flagship programs or channels, introducing advertising, closing down FM frequencies outside of Auckland, closing offices outside of Wellington and more.

Commentators Chris Trotter and Bomber Bradbury will be joining Save RNZ founder Jake Quinn, actress Alix Bushnell, Assoc Professor Martin Hirst and others, in saying a few words at the event.

I can’t believe that commercial stations would welcome this, the radio market is tiny (3.5 million people) and there are already a lot of commercial stations per head of the population. Some stations carry 17 minutes of commercial messages an hour. Do they really want RNZ dipping into this.

Jonathan, if RNZ wants to run with advertising it can be a limit per hours like 6 min. in 1 min. blocks. RNZ needs their am and SW transmitters and money.
AM and SW is not dead, small multiband radios in pocket size are selling great.

Used to work for RNZ :-).

Its political, part of the new world order economy of small government, big business. Not for the first time in history there will be civil war over this issue, and it will all be rolled back.

So keep your heads between your knees. I am aware of a plan to grant parts of the Chatham Islands as war bounty to foriegn mercenary powers, for services rendered. Key targetted assassinations, government ministers, business leaders, that sort of thing. Perhaps once one or two shots are fired you will remember you are Englishmen!

Well, tally ho … off we go!
