Russia will broadcast four radio channels in DRM format

The commission headed by Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev approved the “Conception for the Development of Television and Radio Broadcasting in Russia (2008-2015)” yesterday. It will now be forwarded to the government in the coming days.

We note with interest that the report in Kommersant says ”In addition, four radio channels will be available in the digital DRM format. They will include Mayak, Yunost and Radio Rossii.” The identity of the fourth channel is not mentioned in the report.

Easy way for Putin to try and control what the population listens to, restrict receivers to FM, where they control the licencing, and DRM for state approved broadcasters giving coverage outside urban areas.

Yes, Mike. It’s kind of similar to the US :)

Of course, the Chinese radio receivers sold in Russia aren’t restricted to FM. In most cases they’ve got AM and sometimes LW/SW.

According to the Russian media reports, the forth radio channel is going to be a provincial state-run station.
