The boss of RTL Nederland, Fons van Westerloo, has told Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant that the controversial reality TV show ”The Golden Cage” will be scrapped by the end of the year. RTL took over the show when it bought John de Mol’s struggling TV channel Tien, which closed last Friday. The controversial show has frequently been criticised for sex, violence and foul language.
Van Westerloo says that he personally doesn’t like the show, and it’s still on the air only to allow John de Mol, who produces the programme, to sell the format abroad. Van Westerloo has promised that, if things get out of hand again, RTL will stop the programme immediately. There are currently seven participants in the programme, and the eventual winner will get 1 million euro, plus the villa in which the programme is produced.
