Twenty years ago today Sweden’s prime minister Olof Palme was murdered on a Stockholm street as he walked with his wife from a cinema. I remember the event well, as I was living in Copenhagen at the time and we were able to watch the two national Swedish TV channels from across the water. Later that year, I went to visit my friend and colleague George Wood and his family in Stockholm, and had the chance to stand on the spot where Palme was shot, and visit his grave. George was one of the small team of English producers at Radio Sweden who found themselves covering one of the year’s biggest stories. On the 20th anniversary, Radio Sweden re-visits that terrible day of 20 years ago and asks “Who was Olof Palme and what role did he play in world politics? Who murdered him and why?” You can listen to today’s special programme online, or download it.
