The Brazilian section of Radio Netherlands has won the Vladimir Herzog Prize 2005 in the category radio reports. The prize was awarded for the series “Vozes IndÃgenas no Brasil” (Indigenous Voices of Brazil) in which members of some of Brazil’s 235 indigenous groups talked about their culture. The prize was accepted in São Paulo yesterday by producers Mario de Freitas and Railda Herrero. The radio series was produced in cooperation with the development aid organisation Cordaid. It consisted of 14 half-hour programmes and was broadcast by local stations across Brazil.
The Vladimir Herzog Prize is awarded by the Association of Professional Journalists of São Paulo. This year the prize ceremony had a special character to mark the 30th anniversary of the murder of journalist Vladimir Herzog. He was killed because he had been critical of the military junta then ruling Brazil.
