Radio Budapest’s final English broadcast

Radio Budapest broadcast its final programme in English today at 0230 UTC, which included a musical programme from the archives presented by the late Charlie Coutts. At the end of the programme, the following announcement was broadcast:

“Now I would like to call your attention to the fact that as from June 30th 2007, Radio Budapest will cease to broadcast in English. Instead, Hungarian language broadcasts will be aired on our frequencies. This is part of changing the programme structure of Hungarian public radio in order to have a more cost-effective operation. Thank you for having listened to us.”

The final programme can be heard online or downloaded in Real Audio format from this page (click on the date). But the listed times are local, so the final English transmission is listed as 0430.

The archive of Radio Budapest broadcasts also seems to have disappeared. I used to download these for a client, particularly the 1200-1300 broadcast, burn them to CD and he could listen to them on a mini-hifi. He’s a 77yo ex-pat Hungarian, not computer-literate, and he’ll be very disappointed if I can’t continue to do this.

Sad how things just go away without much notice (or for those of us who just found out right now). I would’ve loved to have had an RSS feed of the English newscast to stick on my PSP for the go. It would’ve peaked my curiosity to learn more about Hungary and it’s people.
