Dutch commercial broadcaster Radio 538 says that in the past few months there has been a huge increase in downloads of music via its Web site. From a couple of hundred a week just a few months ago, the number has risen to several thousand a week. Radio 538 says it cannot explain the massive increase.
Commercial Director Nico Kreuning admits “We don’t know where the growing demand is coming from. Possibly the interest in illegal downloads has decreased because of stronger laws and the virus risk. Maybe these downloads replace buying singles, or perhaps we’re talking of a whole new group of buyers. All we know is that that the number of paid downloads has increased rapidly.”
Radio 538 has been offering music downloads via its site for the past three years. It began with a couple of songs, and the service has gradually expanded. The cost of downloading a single track starts at 99 eurocents.
