The China Daily has published an in-depth profile of Edwin Maher, who worked for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) for nearly 20 years as a weatherman and news anchor. Maher now presents the news on CCTV-9, the international English network of China Central Television.
Maher says he picked up China Radio International on his shortwave radio in Melbourne, one day in 2003. On an impulse, he sent off an e-mail outlining his four decades’ experience as a broadcast journalist. A few days later, he was offered a job in Beijing as voice coach. An Australian news copy editor at CCTV-9 recognized him in a Beijing hotel, and he got a job offer. Maher’s debut as the first Western news anchor on China’s state broadcaster in March 2004, made him a focus of attention.
