Paraguay adopts Japanese digital TV standard

Paraguay has adopted the Japanese digital television standard, joining neighbouring Brazil and Argentina and other countries in the region, the government said.  Most South American nations have opted for the Japanese Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting, or ISDB, standard, although Colombia and Uruguay chose the European standard. “This decision will allow Paraguay to strengthen its (regional) ties with this important technological advance,” said the statement, which was released late on Tuesday.

Around the world, countries are gradually switching to digital television, which allows for the transmission of more channels at higher resolution over less bandwidth. The Japanese standard competes with the European DVB standard, ATSC North American standard and others.

An industry organization of Japanese companies, the Digital Broadcasting Experts Group, has promoted the Japanese standard in Latin America. Leaders of that group include NEC Corp, Japanese Broadcasting Corp (NHK), Panasonic Corp, Fuji Television Network, Hitachi Ltd, Mitsubishi Electric Corp and Sony Corp.
