The New Zealand Government has pulled the plug on a proposal to review digital broadcasting planned by the previous Labour-led government. The review of broadcasting, telecommunications and internet regulations was unveiled in January 2008 by Trevor Mallard, who was Broadcasting Minister. At the time, Mr Mallard said the review was timely, as broadcasting was undergoing a period of significant upheaveal worldwide.
The new broadcasting minister, Jonathan Coleman, says the review will not proceed. Dr Coleman says there is no need for new regulations in the sector, as the current market appears competitive. The Government will instead focus on a digital switch-over and supporting public broadcasting through contestable funding, he says.
