NZ, Australian firms claim “world breakthrough in video on demand”

Text of report by public broadcaster Radio New Zealand International on 21 May

A Nelson Internet provider and an Australian software company have unveiled what they believe is a world breakthrough in video on demand. The companies say their system will allow Internet users to go to a website, select a movie and watch it on their computer almost immediately, with no interruptions.

Stuart Austin of Australian company PacByte says a full-length movie can be loaded onto a PC via a one megabyte broadband connection in two minutes. The Nelson company thepacific.net hopes to roll out the technology within months.

[Radio New Zealand text website adds: "It says the cost will be about the same as hiring a DVD."]
