The website of NHK World carries the following announcement: “It is with our great regret that we have to inform you, at this very short notice, that the SD [Standard Definition] channels of NHK World TV will be terminated at 23:59 on September 30, 2011 (GMT) on Friday, on both BSkyB and Freesat. From October 1, NHK World TV will be available only on HD channels, on Channel 507 on BSkyB service, and on Channel 209 on Freesat.”

Why are they getting rid of NHK World SD for UK and Ireland?

@Winson. Simple - to save money.
I think the terminating the SD version is a real shame - I watched NHK SD every night and really enjoyed the news & documentaries. Thats now ended until I can source a cheap HD box.

well this is upsetting. this was pretty much the only decent channel out there. no ridiculous adverts for a loan i don’t need etc., no stupid reality TV shows… it was easy, pleasant television. guess i’ll have to settle for jibtv.com (which is NHK’s live broadcast stream online for those who aren’t aware of it yet), although it doesn’t air all of NHK’s shows sadly enough. *sigh* better than nothing!
at least i’m not the only one who’s saddened by this.

Personally I find NHK World just as exciting at DWTV. Yawn yawn! LOL

NHK World website says nothing about it now. I had no need to change the channel, I just watched NHK or turned it off. I may have no need for a TV at all now.

Yes it does. It’s highlighted in yellow on their Home Page
