New TV channel to launch in Cambodia

A new television station is due to launch in Cambodia on 9 January. MYTV is a commercial free-to-air TV channel aimed primarily at Cambodia’s youth market. Programming will consist of reality TV formats as well as music programmes, local ‘teen’ dramas and educational documentaries. The channel is owned by joint venture partners mobile phone operator Millicom and Cambodia’s Royal Group of Companies who already own and operate the Cambodian Television Network (CTN) channel.

The format for the new channel is being created by Glen Felgate who will take on the role of General Manager of MYTV while maintaining his current post of General Manager at CTN. “As the number one channel with 65 percent of the prime time viewership we almost had no choice but to launch a second channel,” Mr Felgate said. “CTN’s popularity is such that we have had to turn away commercial bookings because of limitations on our air time. MYTV will play a dual role of catering to a demand for new programming from the youth as well as advertisers trying to reach that particular market.”

While CTN is a mass-market television station, MYTV is the first terrestrial television channel to be aimed at a niche market.
