New FM station licensed in Isle of Man

The Isle of Man Communications Commission has granted a licence for a new FM station. The licence has been awarded to Athol Radio, which will broadcast a music-based format aimed at the over 35’s using the on-air name of 3FM. Athol Radio Chairman, Sam Alder, hopes 3FM will be on the air towards the end of the year. The island already has a station, Energy FM, catering for the 15 to 34 age group, as well as the national broadcaster Manx Radio which is a full-service station. The Isle of Man will also be home to a high power longwave station covering a large part of the UK and Ireland. However, the Communications Commission does not plan to issue any further licences for the time being, as the Broadcasting Act is due to be amended following a debate last week in the island’s parliament.

How is Music Man going to be able to broadcast a desent signal on 269 LW when RTE Radio 1 is on 252? That area of the LW band will bcome overcrowded, surely.

Well, they’re not going to be on 269. The assigned frequency is 279 kHz :-)
