New English-language FM station licensed in Addis Ababa

Paconet Media PLC, a privately held company registered in Addis Ababa, has been awarded an FM Broadcasting licence from the Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority this week for the frequency 105.3 FM to broadcast in the city and its surroundings. The station will be operating under the brand name of “Afro 105.3 FM”.

The station will be broadcasting mainly in English to the vast international community as well as the English speaking population of Addis Ababa. As it is well known, Addis Ababa is home to the African Union as well as home to the largest diplomatic community outside New York with over 100 diplomatic missions present in the city.

Paconet Media will cater to this specific group as well as the new and emerging foreign investors and Diaspora. The station will be an “Infotainment” station with a mix of news (Both local and international), music and talk that we feel will be a gateway between the International community and Ethiopians.

Paconet Media has begun the process of sourcing equipment and man power to start service within the next three months.

Afro FM now has a live audio stereo stream available from it’s website at http://afro105fm.com/105.3_Afro_FM/Listen_Live.html.

Programming observed is mostly in English, but a news bulletin in French was noted at 1030-1045 UTC on 2 February.
