Nepal government waives renewal fees of FM, TV stations

The Government of Nepal has decided to waive the renewal fees for FM and television broadcasting stations for Fiscal Year 2006/2007 in accordance with the National Broadcasting Act, 2049 BS and the National Broadcasting Regulations, 2052 BS. Also, the royalties of Fiscal Year 2005/2006 which the FM broadcasters were to pay in Fiscal Year 2006/2007 have been reduced by 50 per cent, and the broadcasting and distribution royalties for television broadcasting agencies for Fiscal Year 2006/2007 have also been reduced by 50 per cent, according to the Ministry of Information and Communications.

The Government says it took the decision in appreciation of the crucial role the FM and television stations operated by the private sector played in establishing Loktantra [democracy] in Nepal, and also keeping in mind the impact on the business transactions of these broadcasters during the historic people’s movement.
