The number of regional broadcasters will increase in Azerbaijan in the nearest future, said the National Television and Radio Council chairman Nushiravan Maharramli. He added that new regional television companies will be established in regions of Ali Bayramli, Shamakhi, Imishli, Saatli and Bilasuvar. He noted that 14 regional broadcasters have been licensed.
Maharramli said some gaps in legislation are obstacle to establishment of local TV companies. “A presidential decree set the license price at AZN 11,000 (US$12,800). This amount was not classified. These problems will be discussed at a parliament session after budget discussions,” he noted.
He added that foreign broadcasts impede development of cable television in the country. “As long as there are foreign broadcasts in Azerbaijan, cable television will not develop. We want people to get access to 50-60 channels at a low price,” he noted.
