Mediumwave closure could net 20 million euro for RTE

Cash strapped Irish public broadcaster RTE is set to make a windfall from the sale of a 4.5 acre site on Dublin’s Northside. The site, at Beaumont, has been RTE property for the past 60 years and housed a mediumwave transmitter which has now been closed down. Today’s Irish Times suggests that because the site is in a prime location for housing, it could fetch up to 20 million euro. RTE is also reported to be considering a usage review of the 32 acre site occupied by its headquarters in the Montrose suburb of Dublin, another much sought-after area for property developers.

It being in use for ‘60 years’ is not correct. It was built around 1980 replacing another transmitter at Phoenix Park.
