News is emerging from the Balkan region of worsening troubles for MRT, the state-owned broadcaster in FYR Macedonia. Concern has been widespread for some time that the organisation is in significant debt, reported at 15 million Euros. The network employs 1100 people, and many salaries have gone unpaid for some months.
Croatian-based economics consultants Limun.hr report that the government are making amendments to the Broadcasting Act to allow MRT to be declared bankrupt or alternatively, liquidated.
No confirmation has been announced as to which path will be taken. Serbia’s Ekonomist Media Group reported yesterday that unofficial sources suggest a liquidation will take place, followed by a rebranding and relaunch of the state broadcaster under the name Radio Television Macedonia. The most essential staff are set to be reemployed, but many will lose their jobs.
