Long dominant public broadcaster falls on hard times

Austria may have one one of Europe’s richest public broadcasters, but ORF is currently coping with a €100 million budget shortfall. ORF managers, under direction from the Trustees, are slashing almost everything they can think of to save almost €85 million next year. Follow the Media’s Michael Hedges has the details.

According to http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/3165.htm Austria has a per capita income of $44890 and the referenced article show a per capita income for the ORF €100,000 OR OVER $110,000. The mind boggles.

Yes, that can’t be right. I have emailed Michael about it. I think the €900 million revenue for 2007 is correct. A per capita income for the ORF of €100,000 would imply that the total population of Austria is 9000 :-)

    Decimal separator error then.
Austria seems to be the last place in western Europe to have quite such a state broadcaster grip on its airwaves.

Indeed. Michael has now corrected the figures.
