London’s LBC Radio to go quasi-national on DAB

London commercial talk radio station LBC 97.3 FM will expand its terrestrial coverage from early September when it begins broadcasting to a number of other regions in the UK on DAB. The regions to be added are the North West, West Midlands, Yorkshire, the North East, South Wales and the West of England. LBC is already broadcasting the London programme to the whole of the UK and Ireland via satellite on the Sky Digital platform, but the DAB services will include regional news and information as well as simulcasts of programmes produced in London.

LBC is already on air across the North West of England (just done a re-tune on my DAB tuner).

Can’t speak for the other MXR regions in England …

Apparently, all the regional multipexes that previously carried the Digital News Network have indeed started carrying LBC - but these are officially “test transmissions” and the regional service officially launches in September, as the item says.

Being a talk station, will they be sold a 64Kps bit rate, adding yet another low sound-quality station to an already over-crowded multi-plex

The signal strength on DAB is quite low. It will often be OK on a car radio but not inside a house or flat because not enough signal gets through the walls.

LBC on DAB in Tunbridge Wells is now not available, the signal strength has dropped by 50% since their last transmitter maintenance.
