Little interest in operating a sports TV channel in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan National Television & Radio Council will prolong the tender period for opening a sports channel in Azerbaijan. “The situation is not an optimistic one. Almost nobody has joined the tender. Therefore, the tender period will be prolonged for another month,” Chairman of the Television & Radio Council Nushiravan Maharramli said to Trend News.

According to Article 15 of the Law on Television and Radio, on 21 April the Council announced a tender for opening a sports channel, to be broadcast in Baku and Absheron Peninsula via the 58th frequency [sic]. Documents were expected to be submitted to the Council from 21 April to 21 May.

Maharramli said that so far only AzTV has applied for participation in the tender. “On 22 May, the Council will hold a meeting to prolong the period of the tender. As per the Law, at least three applicants must participate in the tender. If new applications are submitted until next month we will not extend the tender term again,” he said.

There are seven national channels in Azerbaijan.

It’s clear that AzTV is goint to win this tender. No wonder others don’t want to be bothered with submitting their bids.
