Japanese companies to develop mobile TV broadcasting for cellphones

NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s largest mobile telephone operator, said today that it had teamed up with a clutch of television companies to develop television broadcasting for cellphones. NTT DoCoMo Inc, Fuji Television Network, Nippon Broadcasting System, satellite broadcaster Sky Perfect Communications and trading house Itochu Corp will each own 20 percent of the 30-million-yen (258,150 dollar) venture.

Japanese cellphone users have since April been able to watch television  programmes on their mobile telephones, but only the same digital terrestrial  broadcasting services received by standard television sets. Japan’s Communications Ministry is considering allowing broadcasts specifically for cellphones from 2008, opening up new possibilities for cellphone operators with interactive programming and advertising.
