Japan takes digital TV broadcasting battle to South America

In April, Peru followed Brazil to become the second nation to adopt the Japanese system of terrestrial digital TV broadcasting, which the Japanese government has been promoting to other countries. In terms of the number of countries adopting digital TV systems, this still leaves the Japanese system lagging behind the European and US systems. But the government and industry officials have voiced expectations that reversing the trend in South America might greatly expand the relevant business opportunities for Japanese companies in the region.

Besides the battle for the sake of competition, I’d like to know if there are any technological arguments why one should choose one of the systems over the other.
