The Indian Government plans to bring an amendment to the Prasa
r Bharti Act to ensure that it serves the objective of Public Service Broadcasting. In an exclusive interview to All India Radio, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Mrs Ambika Soni, while identifying the challenges for the Broadcasting Corporation of India, said a Group of Ministers is already in place to deal with the issues relating to welfare of employees. She added that finances for the Corporation need to be funded so that it is able to discharge its responsibilities effectively.
The Minister said digitalization of All India Radio and Doordarshan, opening more stations of Radio and Doordarshan and starting the third phase of FM stations are some of the priorities for her Ministry. Responding to a question on paid news, she said a report submitted by the Press Council of India after discussions with all stakeholders will be tabled in the Parliament and the final view can be taken by the Members of the two Houses on the issue after a thorough debate. She hailed the initiative of the Election Commission in tackling this problem which she added is not good for the health of Indian Democracy.
