Surinam’s national TV station STVS was off the air for more than 24 hours over the weekend after heavy rain on Thursday and Friday placed the headquarters building and the transmitter room under several centimetres of water. According to Assistant Director Perdiepkomar Khedoe, the national broadcaster has suffered considerable damage, but they have succesfully removed some of the water using hydraulic pumps.
STVS returned to the air at 1700 local time on Sunday. Khedoe says that the programme has had to be modified. Apart from the damage to the building, the broadcasting computers were also damaged, and a smaller computer is currently being used. In addition, that part of the building is still under water. As well as STVS, the transmitters of Radio 10 and Future Radio were also off the air as their transmitters are in the same building as the STVS transmitter.
