Guinean soldiers said to have ransacked national broadcaster’s offices

Text of unattributed report entitled “Economy and politics: RTG-Koloma: Some soldiers ransack some offices and carry away computers and reportage cameras” published by Guineenews website, based in Canada but with editorial team in Guinea, on 24 December

The HQ of the Guinean Radio and Television [RTG], located at Koloma at the upper outskirts of Conakry, was the victim of a strong armed attack by the soldier putchists claiming to belong to the CNDD (National Council for Democracy and Development), carrying away in their wake computers and reportage cameras, Guineenews heard from sources close to the RTG management.

Yesterday Tuesday [23 December], some putchists were reported to have taken advantage of visit of their spokesman, Moussa Dadis Camara, who came to read a communique from the CNDD, to carry out these acts that journalists and technicians on duty strongly condemned.

“They came in a large number with arms in hand to invade the HQ of the radio while ransacking some offices from which they took away some computers and reportage cameras. Even me, they wanted to take my mobile phone away, I had to insist”, a journalist who was a witness of the events explained.

Broadcasts from the RTG which ended yesterday Tuesday at 2200 hours, resumed this Wednesday [24 December] at around 0830h [local time] with Noumba music of the republican guard. Today, before the resumption, members of the CNDD urged journalists and technicians to continue to work. This is because they promised to ensure the security of the RTG personnel the majority of whom remain missing from their various duty posts.

Familia FM broadcasts on 105.3 MHz in Conakry and has a website with streaming audio at http://www.familiafm.com. I thought there was a chance it’d be relaying State radio, but not so - it’s carrying its own programming, but not the usual schedule, many coup mentions but the French newscast at 1815 UTC did not materialise.
