Governor wants to change name of Guam to Guahan

The Governor of Guam, Felix Camacho, has issued an executive order to change the official name of Guam to Guahan. His executive order applies to all GovGuam agencies and encourages the local businesses and the community at large to adopt the name change as well. In addition the executive order requests lawmakers pass a law re-designating Guam as Guahan.

The name Guahan was the name predominantly used for three centuries prior to the 1898 Treaty of Paris. The Governor believes that changing the name back to Guahan will help to preserve the Chamorro language and culture.

Thank you Gov. Camacho for changing Guam to Guahan! If Guahan was what we were called by our natives, then by all means change it. Its better that we go back to our history and our roots than to be called a name that some person messed up on. Right now, we should be going against the person who changed Guahan to Guam, not Gov. Camacho who is name changing to preserve our culture and history! I am proud to be a local Chamorro and a Chamorro Dude.

This executive order is a perfect example of politicians stepping on the people. this decision should be made by the people of guam because im sure there are many others like me who dont agree with the name change. Changing Guam to Guahan could have adverse affects on the tourism economy, but im not a govenor so what do I know?

Guam ALL THE WAY! if you think we should be called Guahan because that’s what we USED to be called, then why not call us Isla Ladrones (Island of Thieves), considering that was the name given to use by the spanish settlers. There is no way of knowing what the original Chamorus called this island, and i’m am quite certain the Isla Ladrones precedes Guahan. I’ve grown up on Guam, not Guahan, and so has everybody else who lives here! There really is no point in trying to change the name. only personal political support from the elderly.

Are you kidding me? I am pretty sure there were Chamorros living before the Spanish Era. In fact the Chamorros werent like the Spanish where history was recorded by writing. Traditions and the Chamorro culture were passed on by either hands on or by word of mouth. So i am confident that Guahan meaning “We have” was preceded before Isla DeDrones” meaning “Island of thieves” Thats just gr8. Spanish gave us the name of the Island of thieves, when in fact Guahan has a lot available resources vital to living. Good job Mister Govenor for Changing Guam to Guahan and not to the Island of Thieves.

They already changed it. Officially as of yesterday. Guam is not Guahan and it’s so stupid. Honestly, why change it, the government should concentrate on the build-up and educational issues. The only reason why they did it is to higher tourism benefits, but it’s so dumb when tourists are commenting Guam doesn’t keep up their historical landmarks. It’s just going to ruin our economy! The government needs to think more.

What the hell? Why would you change it after all these years? If you change it, then you will lose all your tourists…

What makes guam special? What has guam done to make itself known? If you can answer those questions? Then don\’t change the name.

Poli is absolutely right! Where does the Governor get off making this “Executive Order” on his own, without a petition or vote by the peopel (on and off the island) to ratify it? …And we all sit and wonder why there’s so many issues with Gov Guam?!

Carl, no offense, but the name/word Chamorro was given to us as well, and that\’s what we call our people, our culture, our language? …Just saying.
