The MV Norderney, which was the home of offshore broadcaster Radio Veronica from 1964 to 1974, looks set to return to the Netherlands. The plan is for the ship to be anchored in Zwolle, where it will be used as a discotheque.
The mayor and councillors of Zwolle are enthusiastic about the plan, but before they finally agree they want to consult local residents. An information evening has been arranged for Tuesday 11 December, when the residents can give their views. Councillor Gerard van Dooremolen told the Dagblad van het Noorden that “It seems to us fantastic to have such an important icon from Dutch pop history in Zwolle. It can become a real tourist attraction.”
The ship is currently anchored in the harbour of Antwerp, Belgium. Several previous attempts to bring the ship back to the Netherlands have failed because of planning refusals or other objections. This one seems a bit more promising as it already has the backing of the local authority.
