Finnish working group would scrap YLE licence fee - report

Finnish national daily Helsingin Sanomat today quoted a parliamentary working group as proposing replacing the licence fee with a tax levied from everybody, regardless of television or radio ownership. The paper added that the working group, tasked with mulling the funding of the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE), had ruled out both budget funding and advertising.

Helsingin Sanomat further quoted the working group as saying that the YLE tax would be less than 200 euros compared with the current licence fee of 225 euros as fee evasion would be eliminated.

The working group, led by Mika Lintilä (centre) is expected to unveil its recommendations in early May.
