Fashion TV accuses Iran of jamming broadcasts

The international fashion broadcaster Fashion TV yesterday accused the Iranian authorities of blocking its programmes. The Vienna-based station’s complaint came after the BBC, Deutsche Welle and the Voice of America said on Friday that Iran had jammed their transmissions.

“Over recent days Fashion TV programmes broadcast in Europe and the Middle East have been blocked by Iran’s arsenal, which is worthy of Star Wars,” the channel’s founder and chief Michel Adam told AFP. Mr Adam said Iran was probably not deliberately targeting Fashion TV, which broadcasts on a similar frequency to the British, US and German channels.

Fashion TV was “not a political channel”, Adam said, even if the models it featured might not comply with the Islamic republic’s dress laws. Interruptions to broadcasts had been particularly bad since Thursday, when Iran celebrated the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Adam said.

The BBC, Deutsche Welle and Voice of America condemned the jamming of broadcasts on Friday, saying it breached international treaties on signal interference

Fashion TV is on Hotbird 8, 12.207 GHz. Looking up the channel list strongly suggests that the target of the jamming was Iran TV Network.

Anything else got disrupted just as “collateral damage”. Fashion TV, BVN TV and RNW (as mentioned in passing by RNW News; so it was not just the RNW 4 dual mono feed channel on the jammed Media Broadcast transmitter but RNW 1 and RNW 2 as well), Vietnam, R. G. Stair, in the latter two cases probably also disrupting their shortwave transmissions from facilities in Europe, etc. etc.

I wonder which other Hotbird channels have been jammed by Iran, too. The scattered reports about “condemnations” here and there are just glimpses, hardly reflecting the whole magnitude of the sabotage.

I was a huge fan of fashion tv but recently they have let me down really bad, first of all advertising that they are moving to HD and this advert is constantly across the bottom of the screen which spoils viewing.

This has happend twice this year and For many wks at a time which I think is disgusting especially since I wrote polite emails to them about it and they have not responded.

We can’t even get this channel in HD in the UK yet and they don’t like to let on what’s happening with that either.

If anyone knows how I can write a formal complaint to Fashion TV please let me know as I think they have got really rude and arrogant over the many years I’ve been watching and I’m not putting up with it.

I am really angry and sick of these people who think they can be rude especially to loyal viewers.
