European Radio Project - “Meddling by Brussels is out of the question”

The European Radio Project will be entirely funded by Brussels, but all interference from the European authorities ends there, assures Wim Jansen, RNW’s acting Editor-in-Chief:

Wim Jansen“Radio Netherlands Worldwide and the other broadcasters involved have an outstanding reputation in this area. The European Commission has emphasised the importance of this and has indicated that this new organisation must be able to operate in complete independence. Meddling by the Commission or other official bodies is out of the question.”

Mr Jansen was responding to the scepticism that has greeted the announcement of the project in some quarters, including some readers of this Weblog, as the agreement was signed in Brussels today. In the eyes of Mr Jansen the website, which RNW will run, is the heart of the project:

“It will be a multilingual website where people can debate, listen and chat to their hearts’ content, but it will also encompass all the information about the EU. Last but not least, it will provide a platform for the citizens of Europe to post their own news, photos and videos.”
