Euronews to launch Turkish language service

TV channel Euronews and Turkey’s state-run television and radio broadcaster TRT have reached an agreement to launch broadcasts in the Turkish language starting in 2010. The Turkish broadcasts will target the Turkish population residing in the Caucasus, Central Asia and Europe. 20 journalists of TRT will be sent to Euronews headquarters in Lyon, France.

Asked whether inclusion of Turkey in the Euronews family before it joined the EU could be perceived as a political message, Euronews Director General Philppe Cayla said this could be conceived as a political message. But he said Euronews had the right to broadcast in Turkish as Turkey is a member  of the European Broadcasting Union.

One could also regard it as a reward for Turkey’s initiative to broadcast in the minorities’ languages. Democracy is nice:)
