Eritrea: Opposition launches satellite TV against president

Text of report by Kenyan privately-owned newspaper Daily Nation website on 29 February

Eleven Eritrean opposition activists in exile have launched a television broadcast against Eritrea’s President Isayas Afewerki. The group’s spokesman, Mr Mengisteab Asmerom, told the Nation in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, that the new programme, broadcast in Arabic and Tigrigna, is part of a wider struggle against the the Afewerki regime.

The programme is broadcast to Eritrea, East Africa and the Middle East. “The aim of the programme is to expose the increasingly dictatorial Eritrean regime to Eritrean both at home and in exile,” Mr Mengisteab said. “We had no choice but to broadcast via satellite since we want to reach the greatest audience possible in the country through different technologies,” he said. “We are broadcasting the programme from a neighbouring country I don’t want to disclose which one,” Mr Mengisteab said.

Mr Mengisteab said his group plans to hold an all inclusive conference in March to form an opposition government in exile and also intensify the fight against the Afewerki regime. He refused to comment on Ethiopia’s support for the Eritrean opposition, but acknowledged that his group and the Ethiopian government have “mutual interests”.

Thanks, but the report doesn’t even give a name for the station, so searching for details is going to be tricky. Hopefully someone else will be able to help. I’m sure BBC Monitoring are also looking for it.

If anything, that might be just a 10-minute-long weekly program on one of the Ethiopian TV channels. There’s a major cold war going on between Ethiopia and its former territory, Eritrea. There’s a frozen conflict there. The opposition leaders financed by Addis Ababa are not going to be successful unless Ethiopia occupies Eritrea (which is highly doubtful, of course).

Well, I think all they can do is probabily collect the news alerts about eritrea (If negative ofcourse) and repeat it again and again like those news bars we see at the bottom of screans. otherthan that, About the president, I don’t think there is much to say other than his 30 year strugle for independence.
And also, unless they plan to broadcast it from Ethiopia, where they gonna broadcast it from? Somalia?
I also think it is doomed to fail because it is not intended to serve the Eritrean people. rather, it is intended to benefit themselves and the foe Ethiopian government.
No matter how much the Eritrean people feel bad about the current government, they will never betray it to the benefit of Ethiopia.

It’s bad news because they oppose only Iseias, is it personally or political and they have to know Iseias Afwerki means Eritrean people And it means they are opposing all the people and the nation for the benefiot of USA and Ethiopia because these people they point the gun to their parents, sisters, brothers, families, and friends…..etc. They have a bad history. Thank you!!!

SERGEI I AM VERY HAPPY AS AN ETHIOPIAN BECAUSE ERITREA IS NOT PART OF ETHIOPIA , SO SERGEI, WE DONT NEED ERITREA FOREVER. AND WE DONT HAVE TO TAKE OVER ERITREA, BAD IDEA.ETHIOPIANS HAVE LESS HEADACHE THAN ANY TIME BECAUSE OF ERITREA SPLIT, JIBOUTI IS OUR BEST DEAL. I AM ALSO AGAINST ANY ACTIVITY IN ETHIOPIA ON BEHALF OF ERITREANS IT IS NOT WORTH IT.ETHIOPIA WE LEAVE IN PEACE BY PERMANENTLY DISCONNECTING FROM ERITREA AND SOMALIA.

There is no use in starting a channel like this as it is not going to benefit Eritreans . Those who are in exile have little control over them and they have wested interests. What we need today is an independent channel without any affiliation. All the major institutions needed to establish a fare, transparent government that works for the welfare of the people is absent in Eritrea. People are drastically suffering from lack of basic amenities. There is no milk and medicines for the babies. The international community is keeping mum on the atrocities of the Afwerky’s regime. We need a revolution from within the society like what had happened in Egypt.

Go ahead on this way because most of our people does not have the opportunity to get such a unique and new information from different party.

Is it going to help people of Eritrea? What is needed is a complete transformation in the situation. No doubt Afwerki’s government is ruining people and their hard earned independence. But joining hands with Ethiopia may not benefit the already poverty sticken country.

i think isayas is the only main sick head of the government who he stoled our dream of independence to complete dictator ship .so this tv is right to stand against him like it or not .we know the are a lot of supporters for him becouse of villa houses .we have seen them asking him about *tendino and cemento* so we dont care what those pro of him might say …sooner or later he will fall down or dei .

Eritrea and Ethiopia are acting like spoiled kids! It’s time we get over this ridiculous dispute! There are mutual interests for Eritrea and Ethiopia to work together. Ethiopia needs access to the sea and she can pay for it! Eritrea needs the money and the jobs that come along. Both needs friends and allies in this big world with very powerful countries (china, usa, europe etc). Together, they are stronger!
Take the example of the european countries. They were literally killing each other for 3′000 years before making peace —> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_conflicts_in_Europe

do we really need thousands of years before making peace with our neighbors?

    cheers

I do not think the satelite broadcast will help the people of Eritrea.

Eritrea is now in the direction of stability with growth in every sector of the economy. There is no need of destabilizing the effort of the people and government. The people responsible for the satelite broadcast are the pupet of Ethiopian government. Their only wish is to be in power and bring the disaster that we are facing in Africa at current time. There is no need of outside interferance and it is better to leave Eritrea to progress self reliantly in her economic and social development.
