Dutch DJs raise over 7 million euros for charity

In the Netherlands, the annual Serious Request charity campaign fronted by three DJs has raised over seven million euros for the Red Cross. The aid organisation will use the money to prevent and combat malaria. Development Cooperation Minister Bert Koenders pledged three million euros of government money to support the campaign.

Serious Request has been running for the last five years. Three DJs from public radio station 3FM are locked in a glass house in the centre of a Dutch city for six days leading up to Christmas, to be released at 8 pm on Christmas Eve. This year the event was held in Groningen.

They broadcast non-stop and invite listeners to donate money to hear their favourite songs. During the campaign, the DJs don’t eat, surviving on fruit juice, water and vegetable shakes.
