Dutch Classic FM to also play pop music tomorrow

Tomorrow between 7 am and 7 pm Dutch time (0600-1800 UTC) listeners to Classic FM, which normally plays light classical music, will instead hear both classics and pop music. The intention is to demonstrate how many pop music hits were inspired by classical music. Amongst the artists whose music will be featured are Donna Summer, Sting, Queen, Marco Borsato (the most popular Dutch singer) and Elvis Presley.  For example, Donna Summer’s ‘Could It Be Magic’ is based on Prelude nr 20 by Chopin, while Sting’s hit ‘Russians’ was inspired by Prokofiev.

Also featured will be classical-style interpretations of pop music hits. Nigel Kennedy has adapted some of the tunes by The Doors, and Wibi Soerjadi has taken some of Marco Borsato’s hits and re-worked them in a Liszt-like style.

One of the reasons for this special programming is to promote Classic FM’s sponsorship of The Night of the Proms, a music event that brings together pop and classical music. The event runs from 15-24 November in Rotterdam.

If so many pop hits were inspired by classical music, wouldn’t it be more logical to broadcast classical pieces on pop music stations?
