CRI gets better FM frequency in Perth, Australia

FM 104.9 Network Pty Ltd - a China Radio International (CRI Beijing) allied organisation based in Perth, Western Australia - currently uses 104.9 MHz FM with 50W power on a leased basis. But the Australian Communications and Media Authority recently awarded the organisation a licence to operate at 5000 watts maximum power with a directional radiation pattern on 90.5 MHz. The licence was issued following an auction, and the successful bid price was A$320,000.

With these parameters, the signal has the potential to cover the Perth metro area from Rockingham to Joondalup and east to Midland. This is a massively powerful city-wide narrowcast radio licence, arguably the most impressive configuration ever offered for a High-Power Open Narrowcast (HPON) class licence in any Australian capital city to date.

Another good example of how far behind China western nations have become. When will VOA, RFI, RNW and other get the hint and start to target mainstream markets.

It seems the West compiains about China. But when it comes to media, western nations are losing at no end.

What is wrong with western governments????

I agree with you 100% Keith. Unfortunately it’s about money - the Chinese are planning to invest billions in a worldwide media expansion, but Western broadcasters are having to depend on politicians who don’t understand what is going on, and want to provide less money, not more. I am keeping our management informed of all these developments, but as far as the Netherlands is concerned the politicians just tell us that the Netherlands is not a global player and we should leave it to the likes of the BBC. But the BBC World Service is also facing the prospect of significant cuts in the near future.

I know what you mean. Just the other day I was involved in a discussion about public radio. I really feel the problem is no one really has any vision in the public sector. I know what you mean by politicians. But in the Netherlands politicians are under estimating Holland and it’s global presents.
I really think the leaders in Western nations are living in there own world.

When I hear this kind of thing, I just think to myself then why to western nations complain about China? Don’t just sit back and do nothing. Do something.
